Description: This magnificent, rectangular box is an original master work of K. Komogorov from the village of Fedoskino. Entitled “The Forest Situated near Moscow”, this box shows the artist's fantasy on the theme of Russian forest. He imagines the forest like a fantastic land inhabited by different dwarfs, spirits and animals. In the foreground the artist has painted the spirit of violet flower and the battle of the dwarf riding the frog with the cat. The scenes are painted in bright oils inside the hollows whereas the rest space of the box's lid is filled with whimsical gold ornaments that resemble roots of trees and plants. The artist continues to paint these stylish gold ornaments on the box's sides. On the box's front side we can see two additional hollows inside which Komogorov has painted various forest spirits. The right corner of the front side is decorated with elaborately painted gold foliage patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The interior is separated into three sections. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Fedoskino on the box's exterior bottom.
