Description: An expert in painting architectural landscapes, Vladimir Monashov, is the author of this brilliant Fedoskino box. It shows a picturesque view of the Moscow Kremlin in summer. In the foreground we can see the world's famous St. Basil's Cathedral. In the background the artist depicts a fragment of the red bricked wall with its towers: Moskvoretskaya Tower, Konstantino-Yeleninskaya Tower and Nabatnaya (Alarm Bell) Tower. In the far background we can see the following buildings of the Moscow Kremlin (from left to right): the Great Kremlin Palace, the Annunciation Cathedral, the Archangel Cathedral, the Belfry of Ivan the Great, and the Administrative building.
To reproduce an evening atmosphere the artist has painted the composition in light brown, grey and green tones of oils. Brilliance of the cupolas and crosses of the cathedrals is achieved with the help of golden paint. Shining silver powder is used to paint the clouds, to highlight the trees and the Kremlin's wall. A large, radiant piece of mother-of-pearl is inlaid in the architecture of the St. Basil's Cathedral.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The scene is framed with a gold line while the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
