Description: This splendid portrait of Catherine the Great is an interpretation of the canvas-on-oil painting drawn during 1770-1780 by an unknown master. The original is exhibited in the State Art Museum of Belarus.
This portrait can be referred to a special type of ceremonial portrait that was very popular in the second part of the XVIII century. It reflects public and aesthetic views of that epoch. Catherine the Great is drawn here as an ideal monarch, respected and adored by her contemporaries. Various regalia depicted here as signs of monarchical powder show that Catherine II is a wise ruler who continues the political policy of Peter I. This work painted in a rather theatrical manner is an ode to the Empress expressed by means of art.
Turbeneova Irina of Fedoskino is the talented artist responsible for this work. It is a beautiful combination of quality craftsmanship and exceptional artistry. This is evident from the details she accomplishes in such elements like the jewelry, shimmering texture of the satin dress, and, certainly, the perfectly depicted face.
The composition is framed with a gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
