Description: This large, attractive box is a creation of the prominent Fedoskino painter Marya Wagner. It shows the tsar and his servants listening to the musician playing the gusli (gusli is the oldest Russian multi-string plucked instrument) and singing a beautiful song.
The whole surface of the box's exterior is covered with unique and very elaborate Wagner's painting. The rich palette is dominated by brown, green, blue and red oil paints. The oils are mixed with gold and silver metal paint to create a magic glow and breathtaking depth. The composition is complex and includes thirteen human figures, different birds and animals, and intricately detailed Russian wooden medieval architecture. The spirit of old Rus is vividly expressed here.
The edges of the lid and borders of the base are decorated with a gold band. The box's exterior bottom is covered with black lacquer. The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Fedoskino.
