Description:

Oleg Nechaev from the village of Fedoskino always finds interesting themes for his boxes. He chooses rare fairy-tales to depict and some of them are presented in the art of lacquered miniature painting for the first time.
The box has two titles "Tsarevna and her Bridegroom" and "The Sword that Kills by Itself". The subject is based on the Russian folk fairy-tale "Magic Berries". In this tale Tsarevna is kidnapped by a foreign prince. Her father, the old tsar, promises that anyone who is able to return his daughter to the palace will marry his daughter and become the ruler of the kingdom. Nobody is able to fulfill this difficult task. Once Ivan the Soldier finds out where Tsarevna can be found and gets information that the foreign prince can be killed by the magic sword that kills by itself. Ivan finds the magic sword, kills the foreign prince and saves Tsarevna. But the capricious Tsarevna doesn't want to marry the soldier and betrays him. In the end of the tale Tsarevna is punished and Ivan the Soldier becomes the ruler of the kingdom. There is an interesting fact that the magic sword that can kill by itself is mentioned in many Russian fairy-tales and bylinas.
The composition is painted in blue tones of oil paints. Different details are enhanced by bright gold and silver paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The box's exterior is adorned with elegantly designed gold scan ornaments (composed of gold metal shapes glued to the box manually). The work is signed with the artist's name, and the titles.
