Description: This majestic beauty is a creation of Irina Turbenyova from the village of Fedoskino. The box shows a scene from "The Lord of the Rings", an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist J.R.R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel "The Hobbit" (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II.
The box's lid and its four sides show different scenes from the novel. Brilliantly painted and filled with movement, the scenes help to imagine vividly a fantastic world invented by Tolkien. The artist's palette is diverse but the predominance is given to greens and blues. The box's exterior bottom is covered with black lacquer and the box's interior is covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
