Description: This elegantly shaped box is a creation of the talented Fedoskino painter, Irina Turbenyova. It depicts Russian aristocrats amusing themselves with a chess game. A serious gentleman smoking a pipe plays against two pretty, fashionably dressed ladies. The faces and gestures of the players show that they play a gambling game. The face of the gentleman reflects that he has devised a strategy to win while the ladies flirt with him trying to win with the help of their female charm. Their game that takes place in the park, has attracted many curious persons that observe the process of playing with a great interest. On the box's sides the artist continues to paint the chess board and chess pieces; on the box's rear side the artist continues to paint the fluttering veil of one of the ladies.
The scene is painted in various tones of oil paints against the cream background, but the predominance is given to greens and blues. Cream tone has been also chosen by the artist to cover the box's exterior except the exterior bottom that is traditionally covered with black lacquer. The box's interior is covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
