Description:

This beautiful box is the one from the series of works dedicated to old Russian towns painted by talented artist Yuriy Mikhaleov. It shows a view of one of the Churches in the town of Suzdal. Town of Suzdal is considered one of the major religious centers of Russian Orthodoxy.
Suzdal, one of the oldest towns in north-east Russia, was the capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality in the 11th century. Suzdal is located approximately 200 km( or about 120 miles) to the East from Moscow on the banks of the Kamenka River. Today, the town operates as an important tourist center, featuring many fine examples of old Russian architecture and most of them churches and monasteries.
Gray tones are dominated in this composition. The clouds are painted in white and blue paint. Silver paint is used to highlight the cupolas of the cathedral and top of the trees.
The scene is framed with two parallel blue lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2007.
