Description:

This marvelous original work of Andrey Borisov shows Baba-Yaga sitting on the cracked mortar in front of her magic hut on chicken legs. She looks sad because she is thinking about the bygone days. Baba Yaga has been painted countless times by artists who redefine her image in creative and imaginative ways. This painting, once again, is able to convey a new feeling for the witch we all love to hate.
Baba-Yaga is the oldest character of the Slavonic mythology. Originally Baba-Yaga was the goddess of death; people imagined her as a woman with the snake tail who guarded the entrance into the other world and accompanied the souls of dead people into the Kingdom of the Dead.
The work includes three scenes combined by a single subject. On the box's front side the artist has painted the central scene that portrays meditative and sad Baba-Yaga. The beautiful forest landscape is continued on the box's lid and on the box's rear side. Green and brown shades oils typical for depiction of a forest setting predominate here. Lustrous gold paint is used to create a light source in the windows of the hut, to decorate Baba-Yaga's costume and to detail some of the plants. Each scene is framed with gold bands.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, the title ("Baba-Yaga").
