Description:

Pavel Govorun from the village of Fedoskino created this magnificent paper-mache set that consists of a small oval box that rests on a tray. The work is called "The Midsummer Night" and shows how the Russians celebrate this ancient feast. Young lads and girls sing and dance in a ring, jump over the bonfire and unmarried girls throw garlands of flowers on the water intending to find out who their future husbands will be.
The scene is painted in blue tones of oils and detailed with brilliant gold paint. A large piece of mother-of-pearl is set into the central part of the composition.
The exterior of the box and the tray imitate the color of turquoise. For additional decoration the exteriors of the box and the tray are adorned with silver metallic punch-outs hand punched from the metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand.
The piece is made out of papier-mache. The interior of the box is covered with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box sits flat. Both the tray and the box are signed with the artist's name, the year of 2008, Fedoskino and the title.
Size of the box itself:
9x3.5x2 cm
3.5x1.25x0.75 inches
