Description: This interesting box was painted by a well-known and talented Fedoskino artist Yevgeniy Dokuchaev. The box is based on painting "Escaping Criticism", 1874, by Pere Borrell del Caso, oil on canvas, Collection Banco de Espana, Madrid.
Pere Borrell del Caso (1835 - 1910) was a Spanish Catalan painter, illustrator and engraver, best known for his painting Escapando de la crítica (Escaping criticism) (1874), an example of trompe-l'œil style(Art of Trompe L'oeil Paintings). It blurs the boundary between real and fictitious space. Two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name.
