This splendid oval box was painted by the famous Fedoskino artist Vladimir Monashov.
The composition depicts the picturesque of downtown of Sergiev Posad (named Zagorsk in the Soviet times), one of the most interesting towns in Russia. The town was built in the 14th century as a settlement around the St. Trinity Monastery established by reverend Saint Sergious Radonezhsky. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and became one of the most honored Russian Saints. The St. Trinity Sergious Monastery was one of the largest monasteries founded in Russia in the 14th-15th centuries. The cathedral keeps the imperishable relics of Reverend Sergious. For many centuries his tomb has been the place of pilgrimage for orthodox believers. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of the monastery and its founder for the history of Russia. It is the basis that supports Russian spirituality, statehood, and national character.
Various shades of white, light brown and blue tones of oils predominate here. Silver powder helps to create brilliance of the snow. A large piece of mother-of-pearl is set into the center of the scene to attract light to the brilliantly painted medieval architecture. Gold metal leaf produces the effect of the cathedrals' cupolas. In the sky we can see a new moon.
The scene is framed with a gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2009.
