Green is adored by Russian readers for the romantic spirit that is in every of his books.
"The Scarlet Sails" is a story about the romantic and very poor girl, Asole, who dreams that one day a handsome prince will marry her, and take her away from the town where she lives. Every day she sits on the seashore and waits for the ship with scarlet sails, and believes that her prince is on board of this ship. In the end of this story her dream comes true.
For this composition the artist uses a palette full of grays, reds, and blues. Gold is used throughout the scene to outline and detail, as is aluminum, which is mainly applied to create the movement in the water.
The box's sides are adorned with a more complex aquatic plant's ornamentation accented with aluminum.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Gray lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged to the top, and the box rests on bordered platform. The work is signed with the artist's name, Feoskino, and the year of 2009 inside the lid.
