Description: Margarita Khitruk from the village of Fedoskino is the author of this beautiful box. It shows the characters of Lewis Carroll's (1832-1898) classic tale "Alice in Wonderland".
In the middle of the scene we can see the main heroine of the tale, Alice, who sits under the tree and reads a book. The smiling Cheshire Cat sits on the tree, just above Alice's head. From the right of Alice we can see the White Rabbit who is in a great hurry as he may be late, and keep the Duchess waiting for him. In the background (from the left of Alice) the artist has painted the gardeners who have been painting the white roses red, and were interrupted by the Queen. In the background (from the right of Alice) we can also see Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
The scene is painted in brown, lilac, and green oils against the blue background. A large piece of mother-of-pearl is set into Alice's dress. Gold paint is used to draw the watch that the Rabbit holds in his hands and to detail the foliage of the tree; gold also shines through the oils in some areas of the scene like the tree, and the gramophone. A sparkling silver dust is used to highlight the roses, the grass and the foliage of the tree.
The scene is extended on the box's sides where the artist has painted the leaves that come down from the tree mixed with the playing cards. On the box's exterior bottom you can find one more scene that shows the Caterpillar who sits on the big mushroom and smokes the hookah. The box's exterior covered with dark blue lacquer is decorated with the shining gold ribbons detailed with brown oil paint. The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("Alice in Wonderland"), Fedoskino and the year of 2007.
