Description: This classic scene from "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" was painted by Fedoskino artist Masha Zotova.
It shows one of three wonders of the Gvidon's island: the squirrel that all day long cracks golden nuts with emeralds inside and sings songs. The squirrel is sitting inside the crystal house, on the large box full of emeralds gathered by servants from the ground. Tsar Saltan is surprised; he has never seen such a wonder. In the background the Gvidon's palace is painted. Elaborate series of towers, arches, roofs and walls nicely complete the fairy-tale landscape.
Gold paint is used to paint Tsar Saltan's rich attire; gold paint also shines through the fire-bird's feathers, highlights the red carpet and details the costumes of the girls and the warder. Aluminum paint highlights the girls' sarafans, the roofs and produces shimmering light that comes from the magic squirrel.
The box's sides are decorated with elegant gold ornamentation.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at the left, and the box rests flat. The box is signed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino, and year of 2003 of which the piece was finished at the bottom of the scene.
