Description: This splendid view of the St.Petersburg was painted by well-known Fedoskino artist Alexander Chirkov.
Chirkov has used bright red (brick) tones of oils to paint the column whereas the buildings located in the background are painted in light grey tones. This creates the depth of the composition, and focuses the viewer's attention on the column. A large piece of mother-of-pearl shines brightly through the column and the sails of the ship. Additional luster of the cathedral comes from gold and silver paints. Both gold and silver paints create brilliance of the pavement; silver paint is used to highlight the clouds in the sky.
Composition and the box's sides are decorated with elegant gold scan patterns composed of shapes hand punched from gold metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand to the box.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Blue lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, the village Fedoskino, the year of 2008, and the title " St.Petersburg,Rostral Column, a view to the Peter and Paul's Fortress " on the bottom's exterior of the box in gold.
