Description:

One of the most gifted Fedoskino landscape painters, Sergey Parmenov, created this large originally shaped box. The box reminds the shape of samovar and has extensive scenes around the body. All of these scenes are painted to form a single panorama of picturesque Russian winter countryside. Various shades of blue oils suitable for reproduction of the depicted season dominate here. Bright gold paint creates the sparkle of the sunset. Less bright gold paint highlights the ‘snow and water areas' to produce the reflection of the sunset on the snow and on the river.
Long time ago the water was boiled in Russia in a samovar, which literally translated means "self-heating" (samo=self / varit'=to heat). The samovar is attached to a tiny stove unit at the base. This made the tea too hot to drink from a cup and so it was often drunk from a saucer.
The edges of all the parts of the box's body are decorated with gold lines that also serve as a frame for the depicted scenes.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid and the top aren't hinged, and the box rests on six legs. The work is signed by the artist.
