This splendidly painted box is a creation of Boris Shavirin from the village of Fedoskino. The work is painted on a historical subject because the action takes place in the seventeenth century in Moscow. The handsome young man tries to flirt with the pretty boyarynya but her strict mother stops flirtation with swearwords addressed to him.
Light blue and grey tones of oils suitable for depiction of a winter scene predominate here. This rather monotonous palette is enlivened by brilliant gold metal leaf inlay that decorates the costumes of the characters and creates a light source inside the icon. A piece of mother-of-pearl is used highlight the costume of the young man as well as another piece is shines through the walls of the church on the background.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer mixed with a bronze powder covers the sides of the box and red lacquer covers the interior of the box.Bottom of the box is black.
The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the year of 2012.
