Description: This striking view of St.-Petersburg has been painted by Vladimir Monashov. This talented artist was born in 1965 in the village of Fedoskino. In 1980 he entered the Fedoskino Art School where began an active exhibition activity. In 1986 he began working at the Fedoskino factory of miniature painting. Themes of his works are architecture and landscapes.
In the foreground we can see the picturesque embankment of Neva River while in the background the St. Isaac's Cathedral. The drawing is fragile, and even transparent. Cool blues and grays splendidly reproduce the atmosphere of the Northern town built on shore of the Gulf of Finland. A piece of mother-of-pearl is inlaid in the portion of the sky to create the illusion of the sun light struggling through the dense clouds. Gold paint is used to highlight the architecture painted in the foreground and the domes of the cathedral.
This lacquer box is constructed from paper-mache. Dark blue metallic lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while the interior of the work is made of dark blue velvety material. The scene is framed with a silver line. So called "scan" ornaments, glued over the piece of mother-of-pearl are decorates the sides of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. The box rests on four small round metal legs. The work is signed by the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2011.
