Description:

This busy composition was painted by a talented and well-known Fedoskino artist Oleg Nechaev. The work is called "Lukomorye" that can be translated into English as "By the Oceanside". In the Russian folklore "Lukomorye" is also known as the fairy land inhabited by various fairy-tale characters. Here we can remember Pushkin's introduction to the popular poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" that begins with the following line:

An oak tree greening by the ocean;
A golden chain about it wound:
Whereon a learned cat, in motion
Both day and night, will walk around;

The composition shows the characters from different Russian fairy-tales that live in Lukomorye. In the center of the composition the artists have painted an Oak tree. On an Oak tree we can see the Learned Cat from Pushkin's introduction to "Ruslan and Lyudmila". The right side features the Water-Spirit and the water-nymphs. Baba Yaga is flying in her broom, Mermaid is sit on a oak's branch,33 bogatyrs/warriors are coming out from the Sea with Uncle Chernomor. A small portrait of Pushkin can be found almost on the top of the Oak...
The scene is mostly painted in contrast oils-blacks on white.The artist masterfully used golden foil and golden paint to richly highlighted the details of the characters.
The box's exterior is decorated with so called "scan patterns" composed of tiny beads and romps hand punched from silver metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand to the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged to the top of the scene, and rests on wavy platform. Signed with the artist's name and title "Lukomorie".
