This box is a creation of the prominent Fedoskino painter Marya Wagner. It is called "Amusement", and features a circus actor giving a performance to the young Tsaritsa. A monkey is playing the balalaika, and the parrot is singing to the monkey's music.
For this scene the artist chose the rich, bright palette. Several large pieces of mother-of-pearl were used as an under layer for the oils to make the colors brighter and to fill the scene with a magic sparkle. Mother-of-pearl is shines through the central and right parts of the composition!!!
The box's exterior sides imitates a color of stone: gold veins are scattered against the dark lacquered background. Over this imitation, the artist has put gold ornament on the sides of the box. The interior is covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The box has a hinge above the composition, and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
