Description: This beautiful box is a creation of the talented Fedoskino artist, Maria Wagner. She has made a name for herself through her diversity. Her compositions are very easy to recognize. They have a unique flavor that opens a vault of collectable possibilities.
The box shows a recognizable scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Princess Frog". The old tsar decides to test his young and beautiful daughters-in-law and arranges a dance competition for them. The wife of Ivan Tsarevich, Vasilisa the Wise and Clever, wins this competition. She creates a miniature lake full of swans with just one nonchalant wave of her hand.
The scene is beautifully painted in Wagner's signature translucent jewel palette. The artist has mixed various tones of oils with gold and silver powder to create a unique glow and breathtaking depth.
The box's sides are adorned with gold blurry spots and veins to imitate a stone color. In the middle of the box's front side the artist has painted the Frog Princess who has caught Ivan's arrow in the swamp while on the box's rear side she has painted a water lily, all using tempera paints. The edges of the lid and the base of the box are adorned with simple gold ornaments.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
