Description:

This brilliantly painted box continues Anatoliy Kuznetsov's series of works dedicated to Russian cathedrals and monasteries. Here we can see the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood that is one of the main sights of St.Petersburg. The official name is the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.
The name refers to the blood of the assassinated Alexander II of Russia, who was mortally wounded on that site on March 13, 1881. Construction began in 1883 under Alexander III, as a memorial to his father, Alexander II. Work progressed slowly and was finally completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907. Funding was provided by the Imperial family with the support of many private donors.
The scene is painted with photo-quality precision using light blue and gray oils. A very large piece of mother-of-pearl is in-layed in the central part of the composition and to the left . So, part of a bridge, part of the walls of the cathedral and the area behind the trees on the left provides the composition with luster and brilliance.
The scene is framed with gold line; two parallel gold bands wraps around the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on the wavy platform. The work is signed with the name of the artist and the year of 2013.
