Description:

This brilliantly painted box continues Anatoliy Kuznetsov's series of works dedicated to Russian cathedrals and monasteries. Here we can see St. Basils's cathedral that is one of the main sights of Moscow. The official name is the Pokrovskiy Cathedral.
The Cathedral, which was commissioned by Ivan IV (also known as Ivan the Terrible) in Moscow to commemorate the capture of the Khanate of Kazan. In 1588 Tsar Fedor Ivanovich had a chapel added on the eastern side above the grave of Basil Fool for Christ (yurodivy Vassily Blazhenny), a Russian Orthodox saint after whom the cathedral was popularly named.
The scene is painted with photo-quality precision using light blue and gray oils. A very large piece of mother-of-pearl is in-layed in the box and goes from the left to the right. The area of the skies provides the composition with luster and brilliance.
The scene is framed with gold line; two parallel gold bands wraps around the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on the wavy platform. The work is signed with the name of the artist and the year of 2014.
