The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is decorated with rich gold floral ornament, the sides of the box are decorated with other complex ornament.
Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a wavy platform.
