The bird is sit on a finger of a girl and pecks at the grain from the branch she holds in her other hand.
There is great texture throughout the piece. The girl's hair and her dress are intensely vivid. Golubyonkov uses a unique blend of various shades of green and brown oils in order to create the appearance of a background behind the girl.
The painting is framed with a gold band.The base of the box is richly decorated with Scottish ornament painted against the black background.This decoration is very subtle and detailed!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work.The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name.
