This large square box was painted by a well-known Fedoskino artist Marie Wagner.
The painting on this box is based on a Scottish ballad that tell about love of a girl to a young man, but he was bewitched, and main character turns into animals, and we see a girl trying to hold a young man while he turns into a snake, leopard or goose...
The palette and the style of Marie Wagner is quite unique and easy to recognize! Red, green and blue colours are vivid and bright, they create the focal points in the scene.
Aluminum powder combined with the oil paints gives a luminescent quality to the clothing, landscape and to the sky in the background.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene. The box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and village of Fedoskino. The title-Tam Lin is hard to find, it is painted in the black oils under the composition.
