Description: This beautiful panorama of the Moscow Kremlin was painted by Trifonova from Kholui. In the middle of the composition she depicts the St. Basil's Cathedral. The cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1555 and was completed 6 years later. In the background we can see several cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin including the Assumption Cathedral, the Annunciation Cathedral, the Archangel Cathedral; and also the Belfry of Ivan the Great, the Great Kremlin Palace and the Senate building. Next to the of St. Basil's Cathedral stands the monument to Kozma Minin and Dmitri Pozharsky, the heroes of the national struggle for liberation against the Swedish and Polish invaders in 1610-1612. This was the first sculptural monument erected in Moscow. It was put up in 1818 with money raised by public subscription. True to the classical traditions of the time, the famous sculptor, Ivan Martos, clothed his heroes in Grecian garb. High-relief scenes on the bronze plaques set into the pedestal show the people of Nizhny Novgorod donating money and valuables for the army, and the Russians driving out the Poles. The inscription on the pedestal reads: "To Citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky from a grateful Russia 1818''.
The palette is very bright and the colors are extremely radiant. Gold paint is also used to outline the detail of the architecture in the scene, especially, cupolas of the cathedrals. Gold enlivens the colors and brings out their beauty. The lines in the buildings are rigid, accurate, and follow the correct proportions all the way through. When his brush leaves the buildings we see smooth flowing lines that depict the snow, the clouds, and the texture of the snow capped trees.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache made. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer while the interior is painted with red lacquer. Gold ornamentation frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. The lid is hinged and the box rests on four legs. It is signed with the artist's name, title and village.
