Sergey Dmitriyev of Kholuy painted this beautiful composition. His art and his style are a product of self evolution which he has worked very hard on. He has made himself into a great artist by using his God-given talents to their fullest. It isn't surprising that his work gets better with every painting he completes.
The composition shows a romantic scene from peasant life. It's a sunny spring day and the trees are covered with blinding white blossoms. The beautiful girl dressed in traditional Russian costume goes home with a yoke on her shoulders to ease the burden of heavy buckets of water. Behind her back the handsome lad plays accordion and looks at the beauty with admiration. He flirts with her and the girl's happy face shows that she also likes the lad.
The artist paints using nearly a grayscale palette, which he injects with soft yellows, reds and browns. This gray palette is formed by mixing aluminum powder with grey and yellow oils. The blending of cool and warm tones here produces a beautiful decorative effect. This effect is strengthened by inlaying a gold metal leaf in the portion of a tree situated from the left of the girl. Gold paint is used with extreme precision and care in making the scene more bright and shining.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. Gold ornamentation accented with aluminum paint creates a floral medley that frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on a small platform. Signed with the artist's name, the village (Kholui), the title ("In the garden") and the year (2004) at the bottom of composition and on the interior of the lid.
