Description:

This touching composition was painted by T. Makarycheva from the village of Kholui. It depicts a mother-deer, caressing its baby. They stand on the forest glade surrounded with trees and plants covered with snow. The palette of the composition is based on contrasts. Painted in warm light brown tones, the deer, and the bird, flying over them, look very beautifully against the cold blue-greenish tones of the winter landscape. Aluminum paint is used to create the sparkle of snow; gold paint is used to highlight the deer's horns and some parts of the landscape.
The edges of the lid are decorated with gold beads, whereas more elaborate floral pattern wraps around the box's sides. The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Kholui. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four round feet. It is signed with the artist's name, village and title "On the glade".
