Description:

This marvelous box was painted by the talented Kholui artist Gryaznov. The composition depicts a hunter who stands on the small bridge thrown over a brook. He smokes his pipe and looks with pleasure at the sun rising over the forest and the big lake. The warm colors of the sunrise reflect on the foliage, bathing the scene in a soft glow. His dog rushes ahead anticipating a good chase. In the depths of the forest different animals: an elk, a hare, wild boars hide from the hunter and his dog. Everything here creates the atmosphere of silence and serenity in nature.
This box is a nice example of the Kholui school's attention to landscape. The hunter seems to be a part of the landscape, rather than dominating it. The artist pays a lot of attention to the grass, bushes and flowers on the ground; the leaves on the trees; ripple and different tonal changes on the water; and the various bumps and hills of the terrain. The hunter is pretty well drawn in a traditional style. The colors taken from the palette are very natural and realistic, which enhances the quality of the landscape in the way it was rendered. Green, blue and brown tones predominate here. Gold is also used but in very little amounts. The composition is executed scrupulously, with all the details of the landscape faithfully reproduced.
Elegant patterns painted in gold and aluminum decorate the edges of the lid and the box's sides. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, village and title ("At Dawn").
