Description:

This alluring piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Vladimir Kiselev from the village of Kholuy. Vladimir has a talent that is thoroughly recognizable. His compositions are alive. It almost appears as if the action moves while one enjoys the piece. The work continues the artist's Nothern theme, and depicts two tiger cubs playing on the shore of ocean and a magpie observing them. The palette for this composition is undoubtedly cool. He uses this scheme to emphasize the coldness of the climate as well as give an accurate representation of the landscape. Every animal is painted to look how it would in nature. There is tremendous movement in the brushwork, and every detail seems to have been exploited. Even the water owns the random quality found in the ripples, reflections, and waves found in a seascape. Gold paint is used to help truly bring out the details in the composition, especially in the fur of tiger cubs.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation with blue and red accents wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village, the year (2004) and the title ("Tiger cubs and a Magpie").
