Description:

This box featuring St. Petersburg has been painted by the talented Kholui artist Olga Kopienko. Looking at it we can easily recognize such world famous buildings as the St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Admiralty, the Sphinx statue, and others. Each of these buildings can be considered as a symbol of St. Petersburg. The sailing ship depicted in the foreground reminds that St. Petersburg was built as naval stronghold to defend the north frontiers of the country. The white moon depicted in the background is a symbol of "white nights", a very romantic summer period this city is also famous for.
White, gray and brown tones are used to paint the architecture and the ship, while the sky, the sea and the trees are painted in blue paints. Gold paints are used to paint the roofs, and the Sphinx. Aluminum paints are used to detail some of the roofs, and to draw the moon.
The composition is framed with original pattern painted in gold and aluminum. The sides of the box are decorated with neat gold patterns of a bigger size. In the middle of the pattern depicted on the front side the artist has written "The three-hundredth anniversary" in aluminum paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("St. Petersburg"), and the village of Kholui.
