Description:

The talented Rimma Shemyakina from the village of Kholuy is the artist responsible for this gorgeous presentation. The subject is based on a poetic fairy-tale "Snowmaiden" or "Snegurochka" (Russian version of the title). Here the artist has chosen to depict the farewell of Snegurochka with her parents. Snegurochka isn't a human being; she is the daughter of nature. Her mother is Faerie Spring and her father is Mighty Winter. The girl asks them to let her live among people. Her parents permit her leave the forest and begin a new life. The Spirit of Wood promises her parents to defend her from all harm but set the only condition: the girl will be safe from death by the sun's rays only if love for a man doesn't enter her heart.
The composition is painted mostly in blue tons suitable for the reproduction of a winter scene. Faerie Spring and the area around her is painted in green tones to stress influence of the season she presents. Gold and aluminum paints detail the tree in the foreground and the characters' costumes. Fairy Spring and Father Frost are painted so skillfully that it's easy to recognize forest spirits in them. The detailing of all costumes strikes with its intricacy and neatness.
The composition is framed with beautiful patterns painted in gold and aluminum. The same patterns painted in gold wrap around the sides of the box. The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The box is hinged from the left and rests on a small platform. On the interior of the lid the artist identifies this as an author's original design. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui, the year of 2004 and the title ("Snowmaiden").
