Description: Lodygina of Kholuy is the artist who painted this beautiful box depicting events from the fairy tale of the most famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin "Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs." In the story a princess is born who becomes the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. Because of this, an evil queen's magic plate tells the queen that someone else is now the most beautiful person in the kingdom. The queen orders that the princess be taken to the forest to be killed, but ends up at the Seven Bogatyrs' cabin where she lives until she is put into an eternal sleep after eating one of the queen's apples. She would not be saved until Prince Yelisey finds her and they live happily ever after.
The palette used to paint this piece is bright and bold. Combinations of definite and radiant colors achieve the joyful appearance. Gold paint is used to detail the characters' clothes and some other elements of the composition. The line construction is very precise and everything is outlined to give the composition a bold appearance.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer the interior of the box. Gold and aluminum ornamentation frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. The level of excellence in using the gold and aluminum for the decoration is at the same level as was used in the composition. The lid is hinged from the top and the box sits on a flat bottom. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
