This box showing winter troika was painted by Kholui artist Gagaeva. This theme is traditional for Russian lacquer miniature art and very popular among modern artists. Freely racing through the cold in a sled being pulled by three horses is how many people enjoy the winter. It is popular to take these rides at night with a loved one or with an adventurous soul. In the background the artist paints the small village to make a perspective view.
The palette is bold and the colors express the greatness of the Russian winter. Everything in the picture is in the motion. Fantastically beautiful, multi-colored, fairy horses with slender legs and swan-like necks are flying; their undulating tails and luxuriant manes are streaming in the wind; the flakes of snow are whirling and curling everywhere. The people are well-drawn, and there is a nice pattern on the sleigh.
The scene is framed with gold and aluminum pattern that consists of gold snowflakes, aluminum swirls and gold beads. The sides of the box are decorated with gold swirling patterns running parallel to a string of aluminum beads. The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The box is hinged from the top and rests on rounded legs. It is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui, and the title ("Troika").
