Description:

N. Sedov of Kholuy paints this winter landscape of the town of Suzdal. Pictured here are a few of the sixty churches that remain standing in the ancient city which is considered one of the major religious centers for Russian Orthodoxy. It is located approximately 220 km east of Moscow and can be reached by a train, a plane, an automobile, or a boat. The churches depicted here and the many others like them in the city are not only beautiful in their outward appearance, but also on the interior as well. Frescoes and icons painted in the 13th and 14th centuries' line the walls of the churches. In the eyes of Russian Orthodox people this creates an environment that is easy to pray and find spiritual peace in.
The town of Suzdal is depicted at night beneath the full moon and dozens of golden stars. The pale, creamy buildings glow against the black lacquer background, beautifully mimicking the effect of moonlight. All of the features in the scene are dealt with in an individual manner, which gives the buildings, trees, and landscape a distinct appearance. The use of gold in the composition is expertly executed; bringing a gleam to the composition that is not overbearing or obtrusive. Sedov is known for his fine brushwork and attention to detail, which is masterfully exhibited here. A dream-like architectural work.
The box is constructed out of high-quality paper-mache made in the city of Kholuy. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. For decoration Sedov applies fine gold scrollwork to the box. The scrollwork frames the composition on the lid and wraps around the sides of the box. Both designs are intricate, precise, and bring good aesthetics to the box. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a flat bottom. Sedov has written the title ("Suzdal"), Kholuy, and his name at the bottom of composition on the lid.
