Description:

This stunning composition featuring St.-Petersburg was painted by Vladimir Kisilyov from the village of Kholui. His talent is thoroughly recognizable. His compositions are alive. This comes from years of experience.
On the banks of the mighty Neva River stands a stone city in an area where stone is not a part of the natural landscape. In 1703, at the sight of the Peter and Paul Fortress, Peter the Great laid the first stone, which grew into the future capital of pre-revolutionary Russia.
The stylized representation presented here is spectacular in its contrasts and linear structure. The city's most noted monuments are stylized in the icon tradition and placed on each of the five sides of the box. A stretch of the Neva River is depicted on each side of the box. Looking at the box's sides and turning the piece in your hands, you can easily imagine that you are boating on the Niva River observing the sights of St.-Petersburg. You are boating past such famous monuments as the Winter Palace which today is referred to as the Hermitage, the statue of Peter the Great and many others.
The lid's composition shows another panorama of St.-Petersburg. In the center there is the Peter and Paul Fortress. Behind it we can see the Stock Exchange, the St. Isaac's cathedral, the Savior on the Blood Cathedral, the Rostral Columns, and many other monuments.
The artist chose to dominate the composition with main colors. A hay toned tan and crisp aquamarine are beautifully combined here. Bright gold paint abundantly details the architecture and the surrounding landscape.
This lacquer box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening. The lid's artistry is framed with a bold string of golden beads that has been accentuated with smaller strings of aluminum beads that ride above the golden ones. All four of the sides have been decorated with the same pattern of gold and aluminum beads. The piece comes to rest upon four round feet.
An inscription can be found written upon the lid's interior. It announces this piece as an author's original work, the title of the scene, the village name of Kholuy and the year of 2005 of which the piece was finished. The artist also wrote his name, the title, the village name of Kholuy at the bottom of the composition. All of this writing is completed with gold paint.
