This delightful artistry was created by Kholui master N. Zhuravlyova. It shows a cat lying on the green grass among colorful flowers. The cat looks attentively at the beautiful butterfly depicted in the foreground. The cat isn't going to hunt for the butterfly, on the contrary it seems to be enchanted with the butterfly's beauty.
The characters and landscape are painted in ideal contrast with one another creating a realistic feel of three-dimensional imagery. The brushwork is very intricate and even allows a viewer to see the cat's fur as if it were really furry, and makes the butterfly almost weightless as they would be in the wilderness. Gold paint is used to detail the butterfly and some of the flowers.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with beautiful gold patterns. The box's sides are dusted with white paint for additional decoration. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on a small platform. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("Cat among the flowers"), the year of 2005 and the village of Kholui.
