Description:

Shutov Vladimir, from the village of Kholuy, is the talent behind this beautiful work. The colors that he chose fully represent the theme depicted. The box almost appears cold to the touch. The decoration is in sync with the composition, an ideal framing has been created.
The artist depicts the character of the Snowmaiden from the story by the same name. She wanders gracefully through the forest considering all of her feelings for Lyel and the old couple that has been taking such good care of her. She was warned about the consequences of falling in love. But, those words could not deter. This feeling was too strong. She motions in question. Will the bunnies and the birds have the answers for her? They see the confusion in her facial expression and they will attempt to help. This tale is far from finished.
Different shades of blue dominate the scene. Gold paint is used to outline and highlight areas of emphasis in the scene. This is done with subtlety and an eye for artistic integrity. Ultra-fine brushwork creates Snowmaiden's face, her crown, the silkiness of her veil, and the texture of her coat. The trees to the right and to the left of the Snowmaiden are particularly noteworthy. There is excellent texture in the leaves because of their layering.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left and the box rests on a flat bottom. The lid's artistry is framed with precise workings of golden filigree bows accentuated with tiny snowflakes painted with aluminum paint. The similar pattern wraps around the box's sides. The artist has signed his name, the title and the village name of Kholuy along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
