Description: This vivid piece of radiant artistry was created by the talented L. Kosobryukhova of Kholuy. It shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The Humpbacked Pony". In the foreground the artist depicts Ivan riding his faithful friend, the Humpbacked Pony. Ivan holds the golden feather of a firebird that has been the reason of his first errand: he has been obliged to catch the firebird for the old, greedy tsar. In the foreground we can see the huge whale whose back is covered with forests, meadows and villages. This huge monster will help Ivan to fulfill his next errand: he will have to bring the ring of Tsar-Maiden, lost somewhere on the bottom of the ocean.
The colors are very diverse in regards with the spectrum with blue, green, red, yellow, white, and gray all showing up in the scene. Gold paint is used to outline and highlight areas of emphasis in the scene. This is done with subtlety and an eye for artistic integrity. The characters are expressive and painted with subtle blending and natural expressions. Ivan's clothes are painted with a wide array of shades, to create natural folds and draping. This same technique is used to paint the Humpbacked Pony's handsome musculature, and modeled face. The artist has precisely defined each minute detail with a single hair brush. This work demonstrates a mastery of color combination and fine detail.
The box's lid and sides are decorated with beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation. The box is made out of paper-mache made. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on a small platform. The work is signed and titled ("Humpbacked Little Pony") by the artist.
