Description: This Kholui box painted by Gryaznov depicts a scene from peasant life. Its cold winter evening and the red sun painted in the background is going to set. In spite of the strong frost the peasants are busy with their household or they just amuse themselves. The man depicted in the foreground fishes. He has just caught a fish while the red cat tries to steal it. The woman depicted in the foreground goes to an ice-hole to fill her buckets with water while the children sledge merrily.
The landscape is painted in white-bluish palette to reflect the winter season while the characters, their houses are painted in warm orange, red and brown tones. Aluminum paint is used to paint the ice that covers the lake. Gold and aluminum paints are also used to paint the trees, bushes and firs to decorate and animate the composition.
The composition is framed with beautiful gold and aluminum patters. The sides of the box are decorated with the similar patterns but they are complicated with the miniatures of fish inserted into them.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge, and rests on four small legs. It is signed with the name of the artist, village, title and title ("Fishermans").
