Description:

The story of Duke Oleg, also known as Oleg the Wise, is one of the most famous legends and heroes of ancient Russia. By defeating the huge Byzantium army in 907 and various nomadic tribes he was able to ensure Russia peace and good fortune in the land. Legend has it that he met a soothsayer who told Oleg his beloved horse would be the source of his death. Duke deeply loved his faithful steed, but after hearing the prophecy, he ordered the horse to be taken away and put to sleep. As the years passed Oleg reminisced about his glorious battles, and decided to look for the remains of his beloved horse. After finding the bones and skull of his horse he began crying when he realized his mistake. Just as he was crying a poisonous snake slithered from the horse's skull and bit Oleg, which made him drop dead instantly. Thus the prophecy was fulfilled. Mysteriously, the legend of Oleg the Wise dwells in the soul of Russia, ancient and present.
This thoroughly attractive piece of genuine Russian artistry was created by the talented Gryaznov from the village of Kholuy. It is always a pleasure to explore the artistry of a miniature painter that is passionate about their work. This is pure animated brilliance that is as intriguing as it is beautiful.
The artist uses a palette of subdued tones for this somber meeting, instead of the traditional bright primary and secondary colors of a simpler palette. Oleg and his warriors ride past, but the soothsayer quickly grabs their attention. A whirlwind of movement in the right side of the scene is defined by the swirling tail and mane of the horse, as well as the clouds in the sky above. In contrast, the sage stands quietly pointing to the one whose demise he is about to foretell.
Gryaznov has cleverly applied gold paints in all the right places. Shimmering armor seems to reflect the suns rays, and the bridles and saddles are properly ornamented. Detail reigns throughout the scene, from the gnarled tree in the background to the armor of Oleg.
The box's lid and sides are decorated with beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation. The box is made out of paper-mache made. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged and rests on a flat bottom. The artist has signed and titled ("Oleg the Wise") his work at the bottom of the composition.
