This traditional Kholui box has been painted by Nickolay Safarov. It features a scene from the Pushkin's fairy-tale "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". Prince Gvidon, his wife the Princess Swan, and his mother meet the ship on the board of which Tsar Saltan is sailing. Canons fire to welcome the foreign guests, and even uncle old Chernomor and his thirty-three knights have risen from the sea to greet Tsar Saltan. Tsar Saltan heard much about the mysterious and rich island ruled by Prince Gvidon but he doesn't know that powerful Prince Gvidon is his son.
The drawing is colorful and filled with intricate details. Bright red, green, orange, blue color patches seem to be brighter against the black background. The scene is richly enhanced with gold and aluminum paints that add a rich brightness to the work.
The box is richly decorated. Each of the box's four slopping sides are adorned with elaborate gold filigree patterns accented with aluminum paint.
The box is constructed out of high-grade paper-mache. The lid is hinged on top and the box stands on four round feet. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer and interior is painted with red lacquer. The artist wrote his name, the title and the village name of Kholui along the bottom of the lid's composition in gold paint.
