Description: This traditional Kholui box was painted by Andrey Vikulin. It depicts a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The Scarlet Flower", written by S.T. Aksakov. The tale is very similar to what we know today as "Beauty and the Beast." This thrilling tale tells about love of a beautiful girl and a horrible beast that afterwards will turn into a handsome prince.
The image is a classic one showing the main heroine of the tale holding the most beautiful flower in the world in her hands. Here the artist displays filigree skill in decorating small objects with amazing precision, a quality so highly prized in lacquer miniature painting. Ultra-fine brushwork creates the girl's charming face, her rich costume, picturesque landscape, and the beautiful palace depicted in the background. Each element of the composition is richly detailed with brilliant gold paints.
Beautiful ornamentation frames the composition, and wraps around the box's sides. It consists of gold beads of different size, and gold filigree patterns accented with aluminum.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui and the title.
