Description:

This beautiful box was created by V. Shutov from the village of Kholui. Here the artist has chosen to depict a scene from Hans Christian Andersen's popular fairy tale "The Snow Queen". This tale tells about adventures of a little, but very brave girl Gerda. Her friend Kay has been kidnapped by the Snow Queen and she sets out in search of him. Here we see the Snow Queen soaring through the air with Kay, the helpless brother of the determined Gerda. The Snow Queen is on her way back to her frozen kingdom.
Cool tones of blue and turquoise dominate the composition. Gold paint is used to create the light in the windows, and to detail some other elements of the composition. Aluminum power is used to create snowflakes swirling in the night sky, and to add details through out the composition. Swirls of white, violet, dark and light blue paints create the illusion of swirling snow, giving the composition a dynamic quality.
The composition is framed with beautiful ornamentation painted in gold and accented with red tempera paints. The sides of the box are decorated with elaborate and very thin filigree patterns painted in gold and aluminum, and accented with violet tempera paints.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer while the interior is painted with red lacquer. The box rest on a flat bottom and its lid is hinged from the top. The artist has written his name, the title of the piece, and the village name of Kholui at the bottom of the composition.
