Description:

Kholuy artist T. Dobrina created this original composition depicting a scene from the story of "The Dead Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs". The tale of the dead princess is the more legendary and medieval version of what is known by many through childhood as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." In the Russian version, the wicked Queen looks at the magic glass and asks: "Who is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom?". The glass always answers that the Queen is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom until the day when it suddenly announces that there is indeed someone more beautiful than she, her own step-daughter. The Queen orders her servant to kill the Princess in the forest. Feeling sorry for the young beautiful Princess, the servant leaves her in the forest where the girl finds the shelter in the house of seven bogatyrs.
In the upper part of the composition we can see the wicked Queen holding the magic glass in her hands, while in the center there is the Princess strolling in the forest in hope to find a shelter.
The palette is filled with an array of colors that do not come in conflict with each other. Gold paint is used to detail the plants, and to decorate the Princess' s costume. Aluminum paint is used to detail the Queen's hair, and also to highlight her glass and crown.
Gold beads frame the scene, while the sides are decorated with complex gold and aluminum floral patterns.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top, and the box sits flat. Dobrina signed, and titled ("Am I the most beautiful woman in the kingdom?") the composition on the lid.
