This traditional Kholui box has been made by Dobrin Dmitriy.It features the legendary Bogatyr warrior known as Dobrynya Nikitich. He is known primarily for his dramatic battles with dragons. He saved the niece of Prince Vladimir, Zabava, and all people of the kingdom from the Dragon.
The painting within the scene is exceptional. The design is medieval and the colors are fascinating. The figure of Dobrynya Nikitich is painted in light and warm tones that contrast with the dark tones of the background. Using this contrast the artist focuses the viewer's attention on Dobrynya, and also by means of the languages of symbols shows that Dobrynya embodies good, while the Dragon embodies evil. The artist makes excellent use of elaborate gold contouring throughout the composition. Dobrynya's chain armor, his sword and the domes of the cathedrals shine with gold.
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with elegant patterns painted in gold and aluminum.
The box is constructed using quality paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is covered with black lacquer while the interior is painted with red lacquer. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The artist has written Kholui, the title "Dobrynya and the Dragon", and his name at the bottom of the composition.
