Description:

This traditional Kholui box has been painted by V. Morozov. It shows a scene from the well-known Russian fairy-tale "Father Frost" (Morozko). The tale tells about the little girl who is sent to the forest on a bitterly cold night by her cruel stepmother. The stepmother intends to kill the girl because she is more beautiful and hardworking than her own daughter. The poor girl sits under the tree till Father Frost finds her. He blows at her with his frost breathing, but in spite of her suffering, the girl greets him politely and does not complain about her condition. Impressed by her stoicism and respectful demeanor that Father Frost rewards her with a fur coat, a box filled with jewels, and other fine treasures.
The scene shows the old man who hastens to take home his daughter from the forest. Not long ago he has left her in the forest to die from cold by the order of his cruel wife. Fortunately, he understands that he has made a mistake, and after a serious quarrel with his wife decides to come back to the forest to save his daughter. Being afraid that his little daughter is frozen to death, he is amazed when he finds her alive and dressed in rich fur. More over, his daughter is now the owner of the big casket filled precious stones!
The composition is mostly painted in white and blue tones that fit excellently for reproduction of a winter landscape. The costumes of the characters and the steed's harness are detailed with bright gold paints.
The box's sides are decorated with complex and aluminum gold patterns. The box is constructed from paper-mache made. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a lively red lacquer completes the interior of the work. Beautiful gold and aluminum filigree designs wrap around the box's sides. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on a four legs. The work is signed and titled ("Morozko") by the artist.
