This splendid box is created by Dmitriy Dobrin from the village of Kholui. It is called "To Defend Russia", and features Russian warriors who leave their town to protect their wives and little children. The bells sound loudly alarming that the danger threatens the town. In the background the clouds of dust, smoke and fire show that the battle has already begun.
Brown, red and green tones predominate here. The artist makes excellent use of elaborate gold contouring throughout the composition. Chain armor of the warriors, their helmets, and the domes of the cathedrals shine with gold.
The scene is framed with gold beads. The sides of the box are decorated with elaborate gold and aluminum ornamentation.
The box is constructed using quality paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is covered with black lacquer while the interior is painted with red lacquer. The box isn't hinged, and the box rests on three rounded legs. The artist has written Kholui, the title, and his name at the bottom of the composition in gold paints.
